Major Project Grant Request
Amount: $5,000.00
Number of Students the project impacts: 400Purpose of the Grant
As a classroom teacher for the past nineteen years and a literacy specialist for the past three years, I have worked in six different elementary schools in Nebo School District. I was instrumental in helping Hobble Creek Elementary School in Mapleton receive a much appreciated 100% for Kids Grant two years ago. This current school year I have been assigned to Salem Elementary School. I have found a greater need for literacy materials here than at any of the previous schools. The community of Salem has been growing rapidly. The third elementary school opened its doors this fall. Salem Elementary School was the only school in the community for many years until the phenomenal growth rate began. The building has been remodeled, but many of the literacy materials are old and insufficient.
The purpose of this project is to update and increase the number of books in the leveled library, the take home library and the tutoring library. The leveled library is small and only has a few books on some of the reading levels. These books are paperback trade books, and some copies are wearing out and need to be replaced. The take home library needs to be enlarged to meet the growing population within the school boundaries. The tutoring library is in critical need of leveled books.
Describe how this project meets the Major Project qualifications:
This grant request would benefit every student in the school. Balanced Literacy is a research-based reading program. The philosophy is to have classroom teachers provide scaffolding at each child's instructional reading level. Therefore, many books are required at each level of reading in order to move the students along the continuum to become fluent, independent, lifelong readers. The take home library reinforces this continuum as the parents support their child's reading practice at home.Struggling readers need one-on-one tutoring in addition to classroom instruction to provide more reading practice. A volunteer program has been implemented at Salem Elementary and there is a critical need for single title books on each reading level for a tutoring library.

Books in the leveled library are kept in plastic zip-lock bags and are placed in book boxes on shelves. Only teachers check these books out to use for guided reading. Students are on many different reading levels in each class, so each teacher must have four to eight different sets of books at a time depending on how many leveled groups are in each class. Leveled books are not sent home or housed in student desks. Teachers keep the book sets at the guided reading table, and students and teachers treat these books with respect so they will last as long as possible. Take home books are placed in sturdy plastic bags or manila envelopes and are sent home with the students. Tutoring books are single title books kept in plastic tubs in the tutoring room. These books are not sent home. What is your school's current inventory of the materials applied for?
I took an inventory of the number of book sets in the leveled library and quickly realized how limited the resources are at Salem Elementary School. For example, there were only seven boxes of books on level I and nine boxes of books on level J. There were exactly nineteen book titles for level P. Level P is the beginning level for fourth grade. Since students read at different levels regardless of grade limitations, there will be students in third, fourth, and fifth grades reading on a level P. There were six book sets on level X, one book set on level Y, and three book sets on level Z. We have fifth grade students reading on these upper levels, and sixth grades will be returning to elementary schools next year in the Spanish Fork, Salem, and Payson communities. The resources in the tutoring library are extremely insufficient. There are five books on level A, five books on level E, thirteen books on level J, and three individual titles on level M.What other resources have you looked into for funding this project?
I am in the process of filling out the Star Tutoring Grant for $500.00 through the state, but Salem received the grant last year and we have been told that new programs will be funded first. As you can see by the number of books in our tutoring library, the $500.00 dollars awarded last year wasn’t sufficient. I am also applying for another $500.00 grant from Nebo School District.
